Naturally-occurring RNA modified nucleoside Am for vaccine and cancer research; efficiently used in antisense and siRNA medicines by increasing stability of drugs. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of protein synthesis in vitro, by inhibiting RNA polymerase in the process of transcription. It has also been shown to inhibit virus replication in vitro and to have potent inhibitory activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It inhibits viral replication by binding to the viral ribonucleotide reductase enzyme and blocking the conversion of ribonucleotides into deoxyribonucleotides.

It has been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in vitro. It binds to the viral DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis. This inhibition prevents the production of new viral DNA and stops viral replication. It has been shown to inhibit enzyme activities in both human skin cells and leukemia cells, which may be due to its ability to act as a substrate for various enzymes. It is also an effective inhibitor of cellular protein synthesis.

Potential antiviral agent; used to make antiviral agents.
